Jörmungandr - a name that may seem odd at first, yet for a massive serpent ruling the rivers and fiercely guarding its territory, it feels entirely appropriate. Unlike its wandering cousin, the Basilisk, Jörmungandr rarely strays from its environment. Territorial and combative, it confronts any creature that dares to challenge its domain. Strangely, it regurgitates an alkaline compound to soften rocky ground before disappearing into freshly dug tunnels. Careful observation has revealed a peculiar discovery: hidden deep within these sealed burrows lie its eggs. This creature is far more complex and elusive than initially imagined.

Its rivalry with Karkinos is particularly fierce, and while it doesn’t seem to hunt other creatures, its relentless pursuit of these crustaceans suggests it is driven more by territorial instincts than hunger. Perhaps the most puzzling behavior occurs when Jörmungandr disappears into the unknown depths, sometimes following Basilisks, only to reappear shortly after. This raises questions — what draws them deeper, and why do they return so quickly?

Fighting a Jörmungandr is no easy task. Its bite injects a concentrated alkaline substance that drains energy and stamina, leaving its prey vulnerable to the serpent’s relentless assault. In a grim twist, Jörmungandr often swallows its prey alive. Fortunately, a balancing reagent can neutralize the effects of the alkaline bite. Like the Basilisk, Jörmungandr can also expel the substance as a ranged weapon when threatened. The resulting mist irritates skin and corrodes even the toughest exoskeletons, such as the chitin of Karkinos. While the mist itself isn’t lethal, the true danger arises when Jörmungandr exploits the moment of weakness it creates in its prey.

Domesticated:

Mastering the art of handling Jörmungandr’s alkaline substance was less challenging than expected, though its uses proved more intricate. When combined with gunpowder, the reagent triggers a focused, implosive reaction. This intense explosion can pierce through even the thickest armor, transforming ordinary ammunition into armor-piercing rounds. With this, hunting creatures of the deep, especially those armored monstrosities with dense exoskeletons, becomes far more manageable.

The energy-draining properties of the substance have also proven invaluable. When infused into tranquilizer darts, it works with ruthless efficiency. Agile and resilient creatures, like Ravagers, quickly succumb to a deep, draining slumber. It almost feels unfair how effortlessly the substance incapacitates even the most energetic of prey.

Raising a Jörmungandr from an egg reveals an unexpectedly peculiar development. These serpents display a surprising level of intelligence and awareness, far beyond what is seen in their wild counterparts. Observing the young Jörmungandr stirs unsettling thoughts. There’s something almost mystical about them — a sense of kinship, as if they understand more than just their environment. It raises questions of whether these creatures truly evolved naturally or if they were designed for a purpose. At times, this notion feels unsettlingly plausible.

Ecosystem Footprint:

Jörmungandr’s role in the ecosystem is both curious and crucial. Acting almost like a guardian of its territory, it actively keeps more dangerous creatures at bay, including what can only be described as nightmarish alien-creatures straight out of some horror film. While not the best in direct combat, Jörmungandr’s use of its alkaline mist provides it with the upper hand, creating a buffer zone within the blue depths. This chemical warfare seems to shape the very balance of power in the region, with Jörmungandr firmly established as the gatekeeper of its domain. Without it, I suspect these regions would be far more treacherous than they already are.
